Artistry

I believe art is a way of having real conversation about taboo subjects. With art , I channel potentially destructive energy in generative ways. My creative practice is more than a meditation on my personal journey. Art allows me to connect my experiences to larger social conditions.

The path I've walked includes various disciplines.  For the past several years, I focused on developing visual art. Once an actor, I now create performance art. I contribute to anthologies and zines.  I wrote, produced, and directed a short film that is currently in the editing phase. I am learning the basics of graphic design as well as starting to incorporate dance/movement into my practice.  To collaborate on a visual art or performance piece or to secure me for a freelance writing job, click here.

Activism

I believe in making a stand where you are. Many activisms exist, and different forms can be effective at different times for different reasons. One of my mentors, Rha Goddess, once said, "Your vision should excite you--it shouldn't be on your back." I am becoming progressively more excited about the opportunity to ground my work as a change agent in a spiritual core that is both expansive and sustaining.

The path I've walked led me to organizing against sexual violence. I have collaborated on an installation, performed, offered testimony, and instigated countless conversations. The breadth of my interests includes holistic health and transformative justice.  Additionally, I am growing increasingly interested in alternatives to monetary exchange and have begun to forge work-trade agreements with people in my circle.  To hire a speaker for your event, get support with re-imagining organizational structures and practices, or request supportive counseling services (available in 2013); click here.

Social Work

I believe  social workers historically have been and continue to be an oppressive presence in communities, particularly people of color communities, low-income communities, and cross-disability communities. I know that social services are not synonymous with social justice, and I would like to see more of us social workers challenging, rather than accommodating, systems. While some aspiring professionals use an MSW as the fastest route to private psychotherapy practice, others truly want to make a difference but end up in nonprofit structures where their highest accountability is to grantmaking institutions. We can do better.

The path I've walked inspired me to shift case management approaches to mental illness and change the language in a psychoeducation curriculum to be more culturally appropriate and respectful of alternatives to conventional mental health treatment. I helped roll out an innovative, non-punitive intervention designed to assist dually diagnosed individuals improve their drug refusal skills. However, I am most proud of participating, by federal invitation, in curriculum development for a peer engagement guide for female-identified trauma survivors.  To engage my assistance in curriculum development or staff development and training, click here.
