you're gonna love me

gauntlet's been thrown down
and it's the precious blood of America on the ground

so i promise to hold her broken heart together
with both squeezed hands

apply the balm of bipartisan politics to its gory edges

pump accountable public servants through its New York-Washington artery
and, in doing, toss a lifeline to the struggling middle class

believe. we. can.
triumph over even the worst odds

stand beside me

you're gonna love me

political wunderkind

hybrid of Ivy League Conviction
"third world" pragmatism

call me not the lesser of two evils
but the clear choice among many
the Dream who, at long last, pulls up a seat in kings' company

yes, you're gonna love me
till the honeymoon is over
till the romance runs past its 'sell-by date'
till a vigilante Senate
gives my enthusiasm rope enough to hang
on the financial and healthcare and energy crises

yea
you'll take your disappointment
black as i take my coffee black as i take my women

whether history will vindicate my decisions
is anybody's guess
our heroes and our villains
are often one and the same

can't vouch for how i'll use the power once i get it

this is just me
asking you
to vote
Obama
in those local libraries and high school gymnasiums

sincerely yours,

Your future Mr. President
